Large Handmade Bowls for Everyday Use and Decoration

Fluidity and openness characterise Grey Coincidence’s large handmade bowls. I create handmade stoneware which focuses on the simplicity of shapes and the rawness of nature. The darker, earthen shades of grey and brown create an interaction between body and slip as I explore the stoneware base to create a one-of-a-kind large Japanese bowl to be treasured. 

The resulting ceramic homewares are each a true work of art that encapsulates the beauty of the craft. In searching for the balance between strength and fragility, I am able to achieve distinctive identities for each bowl, the clay taken on a journey to what feels almost inevitable.

Japanese inspired stoneware accessories for the home

The coherent identity of each ceramic bowl is a result of looking beyond the physical possibilities of the clay, embracing its unpredictable nature to apply a skin of natural clay slipware. The uniqueness of ceramics is inherent; subtle, random imperfections are flawless tokens of individuality. These standards are fundamental to Japanese aesthetics, especially wabi sabi, where things are as much in bloom as they are in decline – the irregularity of each bowl creating an evocative sensation of ebbs and flows.

Crafting the large stoneware bowls for Grey Coincidence is an adventure in stoneware. Using my favourite locally produced Cornish stoneware, the pieces in this collection carry qualities that reveal the maker’s hand and the ephemerality of ceramicwares – a deliberate, beautiful occurrence that is the foundation of the character of each bowl.
