Handmade Bathroom Accessories Inspired by Japanese Art

Japanese aesthetics embrace simple, unobtrusive beauty. That is precisely how I hand-throw each handmade soap dish. The subtle form is graceful and yet sure of itself. Using a collection of natural clay slips, also created in my studio, I use a large brush to paint the handmade soap dishes, treating each as a blank canvas that deserves its own markings, a response to the personality of the ceramic dish in front of me.

Expressive and Artistic Homewares

The resulting ceramics are invitingly tactile, an intentionally raw piece of stoneware for homes that embrace the textural innocence of the clay as well as the form itself. Marks of making and firing remain present in each soap dish that, for many, would denote imperfection, but I believe to represent the transience of the wabi-sabi philosophy perfectly. This deliberate naivety is an intentional part of creating from my Devonshire studio, a response to the nature of crafting as much as the final stoneware soap dish.
